To say that Christmas is a big deal in my family is an understatement.  See I never grew up waiting in line at the mall to meet Santa or wondering what it was like when he came to deliver presents because he would personally visit our house and check in on us every Christmas Eve.  This tradition created a Christmas spirit that I would grow to appreciate as I got older.

My Dad has been helping the big man from the North Pole since he was 15.  Each year he visits 15-20 houses with anywhere from 1-20 kids per house all before he reaches his final destination at my parent’s annual Christmas Eve party.  Over the years, he has only missed one trip, and this year marked Santa’s 50th ride. Ahhh the holiday season…the perfect chance to spend time with your family, reflect on the year that has past and a new year that is beginning.  It’s also a chance to make sure that everyone you know gets the perfect Christmas card portraying your happy family.

This year, we made a very critical mistake in the world of Christmas Card etiquette…we didn’t order enough, and we didn’t realize that we didn’t order enough (you know we were only short by 40 cards) until we went WWE over the last remaining card. Continue reading »

Stepping Onward

So before Nolin entered our lives, Jenn & I started unconsciously planning for our family.  It started off with a neighborhood stray cat that we began taking care of, moved on to a stranded dog that we took in, then opening our home to an amazing foreign exchange student for a year, and also working with foster children through Stepping Onward an organization that we were part of.

On the weekends, we would meet with several foster children in the Boys Town program and run with them.  While probably only a few of the children enjoyed the actual running part, I think all of them enjoyed the attention and the opportunity to have someone take interest in them.  It was a fun time in our lives and a great learning experience for our future.  As our lives changed and the children and foster parents moved in & out of the program it became a little more difficult to keep the program up.

Stepping Onward’s motto is Every Journey Begins With The First Step…so it was only fitting that Nolin’s first road race  was the fun run at the Candy Cane 5K benefiting our friends at Boys Town. Continue reading »

A Few Of My Favorite Things (pt.2)

On a recent business trip I realized how much Nolin changes these days.  I have enjoyed being a parent since day one, but I have to admit that each day continues to become more fun and exciting.

After spending 18 months with Nolin, I am pretty sure we are going to have a kid on our hands that has a lot (and by a lot, I mean a whole lot) of personality.  Here are a few more of my favorite things that Nolin does…

Can’t Touch This: MC Hammer should have taken his own advice and told his entourage to stay away from his money…apparently Nolin listens just about as well.  At 18 months it is a delicate balance between keeping your child from hurting themselves and keeping your child from breaking everything in your house.  So you will often find yourself trying to teach them right from wrong.  Luckily Nolin has a good grasp on right and wrong…it doesn’t necessarily stop him from doing something, but at least now he let’s you know that he shouldn’t be doing it.  One of his new favorite sayings is “Do Not Touch“.  Each word emphasized for dramatic effect. It may be because Nolin is still easily influenced and Jenn is afraid that extended periods with just me may result in an early childhood addiction to ice cream and/or frozen pizza.  Or maybe she is afraid that she will come home and he’ll be saying holla and dancing to Rico Suave.  Most likely it is just due to my work schedule and the fact that we are usually always hanging out together as a family.

Needless to say there is not always a lot of just Nolin and daddy time and if there was he would probably be asking for Pap Pap (something I am sure I will get into later). Continue reading »
